சேக்கிழார் அருளிச் செய்த திருத்தொண்டர்புராணம்
பன்னிரண்டாம் திருமுறை
தில்லைவாழந்தணர் புராணம்

திருச்சிற்றம்பலம்

இங்கிதன் நாமம் கூறின் இவ்வுலகத்து முன்னாள்
தங்கிருள் இரண்டின் மாக்கள் சிந்தையுள் சார்ந்து நின்ற
பொங்கிய இருளை ஏனைப் புற இருள் போக்குகின்ற
செங்கதிரவன் போல் நீக்கும் திருத்தொண்டர் புராணம் என்பாம் ௧௨-பாயிரம்-௧0

Meaning of the Prayer Song:

Its name is, "Thiruthondar Puranam" that drives off the darkness
in the hearts of the people, like the Sun that drives off the 
external darkness!

 Notes: 

1.mAkkaL - people (pashus).

2. The poet Sekkizhar has brilliantly articulated the core intent of his
epic, as he named the epic. The darkness in all our thoughts is the 
limited ego consciousness. The epic of Thrituthondar Puranam describes through
the lives of the Nayanmar saints, how great people eliminated the ego consciousness
through the devotion to Lord Shiva. That exemplification inspires us into the 
devotion to Lord Shiva ultimately losing our ego consciousness thus driving away 
the darkness and providing the Bliss.

3. Thiruthondar Puranam is the name Sekkizhar kept for the epic.
Since this epic talks about the lives of the great people (Periyar),
it was called later as Periyar Puranam, which finally became Periya Puranam.
