  • Venjamakoodal is named after the confluence (Kudal) of Kudakanar and Chittaru (currently known as Kulaganaru though Sundarar mentions it as Chittaru in his record) which is a tributary of Amaravati and as this place was ruled by Venjaman, a hunter king; 
  • Indra, the leader of the devas, was cursed by Gautama Maharishi when he saw that Indra was trying to get his wife Akalya with his desire. By worshiping Lord Shiva here, Indra got the blessing that the curse would be removed at te appropriate time .
  • At one time, while Uma devi was sitting in the form of an old woman, the Lord in this place gave his children to the old woman in exchange for gold and gave it to Sundarar; Kongu Mandal Shatakam mentions this incident.

Specialities

Vegnsamakudal temple
  • The dam at Vedasandur once broke, the black stones of the temple were washed away by the flood of Kudaganar for 2 km, and the town was in a state of ruin. In 1986 temple was reconstructed and Mahakumbabhishekam was conducted.
  • The details of the country, tradition, period, constellation etc. are written under the froms of the Nayanmars.
  • The Murthis of all the seven Kongu Thevaram Kshetras are carved on the doors of the Moolavar Sannidhi.
  • It is also sung in Thirupugal.
  • There is a five-tiered Rajagopuram.
  • There is a black stone lamp post.
  • In the inscription the Lord's name is 'Venjamakoodal Vikirthar' and the goddess' name is 'Panimozhiyar'.
  • Kandiyadeva alias the Sundrapandiya deva expanded the Amman shrine and repaired the temple in some detail. This he did in the third year of the reign of Parakesarivarman Tribhuvana Chakravarty Veerapandiyan.
  • Jayakesari is mentioned in the title of one Konerinmai Kondan inscription. It indicates the whole town given to the Lord of Thiruvenjamakoodal. Venjamakoodal was one of the towns under the Vengala kingdom.
