  • Lord Muruga worshiped Lord Shiva here. Hence the name Murugan Poondi. Lord Muruga came to this Shivsthalam and worshiped the Shivlingam to get rid of the brahmahatti dosha caused by killing Soorapadman .
  • Agasthyar, Markanteyar, Durvasar worshiped here.
  • It is said that Durvasar brought the Madhavi tree (Kurukkatthi tree) here from the world of Karpaka; Hence it is also called Madhavivanam.
  • Maharathan, a Pandya king, took a dip in  Shanmukha Tirtha and offered Payasam enriched with cow milk and sugar crystals to Lord Shiva and gave the Prasadam to the brahmins. As a result, he was blessed with twins.
  • Sundarar received the rewards given by his friend Cheraman Perumal at Kodungolur and when he was returning to Tiruvarur through this route, the Lord sent the hunters to capture the rewards he had. Lord Sunderar appealed to the Lord of Tirumuruganpoondi by singing the song “Kodugu Venjilai”. Pleased, the Lord again gave those rewards back to Sundarar.
  • The temple Sthalapurana has been written by Chettipalayam Vasudeva Mudaliar.

  • Tempe is situated on the northern bank of the Noyal River.
  • Swami and Ambal are west facing shrines; The face of Ambal's Peetha is towards North.
  • Entering beyond the sixteen-quarter hall, on the right are forms of hunter and Sundarar (one in a dejected state and the other in a state of rejoicing after getting back the rewards).
  • 1 km on the way to Avinasi, 'Koopiduvinayak' who called Sundarar (the place where robbery took place) and showed him the location of the Lord who had diverted the funds. He is on a rock in the distance.

  • Inscription: This temple has an inscription of Veerarajendran of Konguch Chola. And Konerinmai Kondan, Kulothunga Chola Deva, Vikrama Chola Deva, whose inscriptions are also there. Apart from these inscriptions there is also an inscription of Veera Nanjayaraya Wodeyar.
  • Among the kings mentioned here are Veerarajendran and Kulothunga Choladevan whose inscriptions of the times mention the endowments granted by them for lighting lamps at the temple of Tirumurugan Poondi. The Vikrama Chola inscription mentions the grant of land to maintain a floral garden.
