The name of the town is Karuvur (Garbha Puri) and the temple here is called Anilai because Kamadenu was worshipped.
  • Brahma became proud of himself because of his ability to perform of creation. At that time as per the guidance of Narada, Kamadhenu came to this temple which was a forest of Vanji trees and did penance. It worshiped the Swayambu Shivalinga Murthy in the anthill by pouring milk every day.  One day Kamadhenu mistakenly stepped on head of the Shivalinga and Kamadhenu felt sorry.  The Lord blessed Kamadhenu and gave boon to Kamadhenu that he will be called by the name Pasupatishwarar, as Kamadhenu worshipped. He also gave Kamathenu the power to perform creation like Brahma. Accordingly, Kamadenu began the work of creation. Brahma's pride got subdued as he realized that everyone can attain great potential through the blessings of Lord Shiva. Brahma worshipped her, who had lost his pride. The Lord again gave the work of creation to Brahma. Hence this town got the name Karuvur or Garbha Puri.
  • Indra invited Emperor Muchukundha of Karuvur for the wedding of his daughter Devasena to Lord Muruga at Tiruparangunram. From this, the ancience of Karuvur can be realized.
