Sthala Puranam

  • Vanchi was the capital of the Chera Empire during the Sangam period. As the main deity of the Chera kings, the Lord in this place is called Thiruvanchikulam Mahadeva. (It was called Anjaikalam in Tamil Thirumurai songs).
  • This is the place where Parashurama worshipped to get rid of the sin of killing his mother.
  • The Nataraja worshipped by Cheraman Perumal Perumakodhai is here in this temple. 
  • According to history, a white elephant came from Kailash and carried Sundarara to Kailash from this place. Cheraman followed him on his horse chanting Panchakshara into its ears.

Specialities

  • This place is the birth place of of Kalarittararivar Nayanar (Cheraman Perumal Perumakodhai). Place of birth: Kodungolur; Place of Moksha - Thiruvanchikulam / Kailash; Gurupuja day: Aadi (Karkatakam) - Swati.
  • Cheraman and Sundarar Vigrahas are present in the same shrine.
  • When going to the temple, the large platform in the middle of the road is called "ana vantha Meda". (Platform where the elephant came)
  • There are vigrahas of the eight Ashta Vidyeswaras in the Dvajasthamba.
  • Following the Kerala tradition, there is a tradition of bursting firecrackers and praying at this temple.
  • Thiruvanchikulam Mahadevar is a self-manifest shivalinga. It is only a few inches above the ground level. 
  • Shankhabhishekam is a special worship here.
  • Brahmotsavam is held for 8 days in the month of Masi (Kumbam).
  • The Nataraja Vigraha here is a Panchaloka Vigaraha; Under it is written "Thiruvanchi Kulathu Sabapati"
  • On the side wall of the entrance to the eastern Rajagopuram, elephant figures are placed as if entering the temple from the outside and on the opposite wall as if coming out of the temple. 
  • The images of Sundarar and Cheraman are copper vigrahas.
  • Thiruvanjikulam oceanEvery year, on the auspicious day of Aadi Swathi, when Sundarar and Cheraman departed for Kailash, they perform abhishekam to Sundarar and Cheraman and celebrate the festival. On this one day only, Agama Puja is performed according to the Tamil Nadu tradition.
  • The woodwork here is worth seeing.
  • The white well is important.
  • The Arattu (Theerthavari) festival is held during the new moon (Amavasya).
  • The towers in front of the temple were destroyed by the Dutch in 1670. Only two storeys remain under the western tower. 
  • The temple suffered great damage due to the brutal attack by Tipu Sultan. A Sanskrit inscription in Malayalam script in the temple's Namaskara Mandapam tells the story of 'the temple, which was demolished by religious extremists, being rebuilt by Paliyath Govindan Achan'.
