cengunrur temple

  • The hill is called Sengodu due to its reddish color. It has many other names like Deiva thirumalai, Nagamalai, Uragagiri.
  • Once Adisesha and Vayu had a contest as to who was the greatest among them.  Adhisesha bet that Vayu should release the mountain by his strength while he covers Mount Meru with his hoods. Accordingly Adishesha covered the Meru mount with his hood and Vayu blew with his full strength. Some ridges of the Meru mountain flew away and fell at many places on Earth due to the speed with which the Vayu blew. One of them is Thiruchengode.  Hence this mountain is also known as Nagagiri, Vayumalai.
  • History has it that Kedara Gauri got the left half of Lord's body by anointing the emerald lingam here.
  • Sambandar first worshiped this temple in Kongu region's Tirtha Yatra, then visited some other abodes and came back here. At that time, the devotees who came with him were impacted by a dangerous fever. Sambandhar sang 'Avvinyaku ivvinaiyam' padhikam and decreed 'Thirunilakantam' and drove away the fever from the whole region. This incident is described in the Periya Puranam.
  • A story told in this temple:- Pandipulavareru wrote a poem "Samaramughat Thiruchengode" - but couldn't complete that. Sengottuvelar came as a cowherd boy to him as the student of the scholar named Gunaseelar who lived here. It is said that Velavan, who came as a boy, made that poet return back after finishing the song saying "Athu Kumaran Thirumal Murugan Mailvaganam Kothumenere" - It is said that this happened at the foot of the hill.
  • There is a Thalapurana sung by Veerakavirajapandithar.
