Prayer of the Day

Prayer from Basavanna Vachana

Song as Romanized text

nAdapriya shivaneMbaru nAdapriya shivanallaiyA!
vEdapriya shivanembaru vEdapriya shivanallaiyyA!
nAdava nuDisida rAvaNaMge are AyushyavAyittu!
vEdavanOdida bhrahmana shira hOyittu!
nAdapriyanU alla, vEdapriyanU alla,
bhaktipriya namma kUDalasaMgamadEva!

Meaning of the Prayer Song:

They say Shiva is pleased with music; Shiva is not pleased with music!
They say Shiva is pleased with vedas; Shiva is not pleased with vedas!
For the Ravan who played music got his life-span shortened!
For the Brahma who chanted vedas, one head is gone!
He is neither pleased with music; nor pleased with vedas;
Our Kudalasangamadeva is pleased with devotion!!

 Notes:

1. Due care has to be taken in interpreting this song.
Worship through music is a great upasana.
Those who have tasted it could image the height
it can a take a worshipper to.
Same way vedas are highly venerable.
They form the basis of our religion. Vedic wisdom is liberating.
However if the spirit of devotion is taken off from music
or vedas they become tools not properly applied.
Our Lord Shiva indeed loves our devotion!!
