Meaning:
The days that went off in childhood,
the days that went off staying on the snow-petal-floral-plait ladies,
the days that went off having the staff weakened by age,
I ruined myself without goal,
oh the Lord of thirukkoNDIccaram where in the fields cEl fishes wander!
Notes:
1. It is well known that appar was not married. He joined
the jaina schools very early in his life and returned to
shaivism at much later point in life. How is he saying,
"panimalark kuzal kOthaimAr mElanAy"? The answer is
this is a song that is sung from a generic human life cycle
perspective not necessarily his own life. Childhood,
youth and aged are the three stages sung by many other saints
as well. For example shankara bhagavatpAda who did not
live the aged life talks about all the three stages in the
shivAparAda kshamApana stotram. (http://www.shaivam.org/siddhanta/sta.htm )
2. Our saint beautifully portrays the problem of most people.
They are all lost in the daily routines and die with no
difference than an insect that works to eat, eats,
sleeps, multiplies and dies off! They do not know
what they need to do. The environment sets them
the directions. The wander in the sea as pilot-less
boats swayed all the directions by the winds. Only
those who make at least an earnest attempt to move
towards the Bliss that Lord shiva is showering, have
made any benefit of the life.
