Nine divisions of the jaMbu dvIpa (Asia)

The jaMbu dvIpam which refers to the Asian Continent was divided into nine parts according to the scriptures. These nine parts are:

  1. ilAvR^ita (Himalayan, Tibet regions)
  2. bhadrAshva (Region East of Himalayas) East
  3. hari (Arabia) South
  4. ketumAlaM (Iran, Turkey) West
  5. ramyaka (Russia, Siberia) North
  6. hiraNmaya (Manchuria) North
  7. kuru (Mongolia) North
  8. kiMpuruSha / kiMnara (Lower bounds of Himalyas) South
  9. bhArata (Indian subcontinent)
